Muggings and other violent crime also cannot be ruled out. Crime tends to increase slightly during and right before Ramadan, due to financial pressures.
Traffic in Jakarta can be quite dangerous. Locals will often drive aggressively and have little regard for traffic laws. Traffic lights at night can be potentially unsafe and serve as traps for robbery, so stay alert.
Scammers frequently operate around popular tourism destinations. Remain attentive at all times, as thieves can relieve you of your possessions very quickly. Thieves can also work in pairs: some types of beggars can be insistent and distract you while another thief quietly pickpockets your person. Do not carry high amounts of cash on your person, and keep personal documents separate from your wallet to minimize the chance of loss.
Whenever possible, stick to larger, well-lit roads and avoid side-alleys or isolated streets, especially after dark. At night, it is best to remain in areas with lots of people. If you can help it, avoid travelling alone.
There are specific areas of Jakarta that visitors should avoid. Block M in South Jakarta is notorious for nightlife establishments of dubious reputation concerning criminal activity. The general South Jakarta region has seen elevated crime in recent years. The Ancol Port area and other areas (Glodok) in North Jakarta are also notorious for sketchy establishments and higher crime rates.
